The Department of Psychology at Washington College invites applications for a two-year Visiting Assistant Professor in Counseling Psychology for the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 academic years. Preference will be given to individuals able to teach Theories and Processes of Counseling, a Psychopathology course focusing on traditional psychiatric disorders, General Psychology, and a lab or non-lab course within one’s area of expertise. The ability to contribute to other course offerings such as Mindfulness, Human Sexuality, or Multicultural Competence with Lab is highly desirable. The typical teaching load is three courses per semester, although a course with an associated experiential laboratory counts as 1.5 courses. The opportunity is also available to earn partial course credit for mentoring senior thesis projects.

Candidates should have earned a Ph.D. in Counseling, Clinical, or Community Psychology by the start date. Outstanding ABD candidates with teaching experience will also be considered. We particularly value candidates who demonstrate a passion for undergraduate education in a liberal arts setting and a desire for engaging students within and outside the classroom. Candidates are expected to hold office hours and work with the Office of Academic Skills and similar departments to support student success.

This position comes with a personal office and computer and dedicated lab/meeting space within the Psychology Department. There are department and college funds available to support teaching, research, and travel to conferences.

Washington College, founded in 1782, is a liberal arts institution located on the rural Eastern Shore of Maryland. We have about 1,000 students and a 9:1 ratio of students to educators. Psychology, housed in the Natural Sciences Division, is one of the three largest majors at Washington College and most of our majors choose to complete our Clinical-Counseling concentration within the major.

Please submit the following items through the college’s online portal, available at https://www.washcoll.edu/people_departments/offices/human-resources/employment/index.php: a cover letter identifying your area of expertise, courses you are prepared to teach, and specific examples of how your work  has promoted diversity, equity, and inclusion through your teaching, mentoring, and/or outreach; a curriculum vitae; teaching evaluations; official graduate transcripts; and contact information for three professional references. If possible, please include all materials in one PDF. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Inquiries should be directed to Dr. Tia Murphy, Chair of the Psychology Department (tmurphy2@washcoll.edu).
