The Department of Psychology at Capilano University invites applications for a new position of Regular Psychology Laboratory Supervisor to begin September 1, 2024 or earlier (as early as May 1, 2024). The successful candidate will bring a range of research and lab management experience to our Department in helping to build/create an innovative research lab. This position will primarily involve managing ongoing operations of the Departmental lab, and working in collaboration with psychology faculty in developing and overseeing workshops and/or tutorials relevant to students of psychology at various undergraduate levels, both in relation to general research skills in the field and course content of Introduction to Psychology, research methods, and upper level courses. The ideal candidate will complement faculty and the broader institutional efforts in implementing an academic plan focused on providing students with a learning experience that is region-integrated, involves applied learning opportunities in authentic and interactive settings, and supports them in fostering leadership skills and innovation.

The successful applicant will join a group of scholars who share a commitment to readying our students for dynamic career trajectories that build their capacities to innovate and lead, while also developing self and social awareness. We have 4 years of courses that cover a breadth of psychology specialties, with a focus throughout on learning outcomes explicitly shaped by APA guidelines. Our students are invited to experience work integrated learning and to participate in research in collaboration with faculty. We operate on a collegial model, with shared decision-making and planning at the departmental level, and we do best with cooperation, camaraderie, and sharing of service work. We are committed to anti-oppressive practices and decolonizing methodologies, and to embedding Indigenous knowledge in our courses through work with Knowledge Keepers and Elders.

We aim to provide students with applied and research skills related experience both within the classroom, and in the context of a dedicated Psychology Lab Setting, and the community.

Some of the key responsibilities of the Laboratory Supervisor include:

    • Management of a student research participation pool

    • Management of operational elements of the lab, including scheduling, ordering of equipment/supplies, use and oversight of renewables, and development of relevant policies around usage of space and equipment

    • Acquisition and management of software, hardware and supplies required for lab and research uses

    • Supporting psychology students and faculty, for example, in relation to Honours and independent research projects

    What you’ll bring

    Required

    • Minimum of an MA or MSc in Psychology

    • Direct experience managing a lab relevant to psychological science, research and teaching, ideally in a post-secondary educational setting

    • Experience with developing and giving workshops relating to research, and topics and/or applied skills in psychology

    • Experience with a wide range of research methods and data analysis approaches, including quantitative and qualitative approaches, and ideally knowledge and experience with applications of Indigenous Ways of Knowing and community-engaged research

    • Demonstrated commitment to professional development that supports and promotes equity, diversity, social justice and the inclusion of diverse ways of being, knowing, learning, and investigating

    • Demonstrated commitment to collegiality, through respectful and fair engagement with colleagues, and evidence of service work relative to stage of career

    Preferred

    • Strong interpersonal skills suited for collaborating with faculty and students on a wide range of learning and research focused activities

    • Strong verbal and written communication skills

    • Experience with academic writing skills and APA publication standards

    • Experience using software relevant to research participation, experimental programming and data collection and analysis

    • Commitment to anti-oppressive practices and decolonization.

Candidates should submit a Cover Letter, CV, sample(s) of lab activities or workshop(s) developed and/or delivered, a list of proficiencies in software and management tools (e.g., experiment programming, data collection/analysis, participant pool) and research equipment/tools, and contact details for 2 references.
