Faculty Professor Teaching Assistant - Full-Time

The Department of Psychology and the College of General Studies (CGS) in the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh invite applications for a full-time faculty position at the level of Teaching Assistant Professor in Psychology. This individual will teach three undergraduate courses per semester during the fall and spring semesters. In consultation with Psychology and CGS, three of the six courses will be taught online and three in person. These positions are pending budgetary approval and are outside of the tenure stream. The position will begin in the Fall 2024 semester with an initial appointment of three years and subsequent renewals of three years, subject to performance reviews and departmental needs. Applicants should have a strong track record of innovation and success in undergraduate teaching and be able to teach both introductory-level and upper-level college courses in Psychology. The field of specialization is open, but candidates with the qualifications and experience to teach in the following areas are especially encouraged: Psychopathology, Personality Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Social Psychology, and Research Methods.  

The successful candidate will join a community of teaching-focused faculty who provide department-wide teaching mentorship. Teaching Professors have the opportunity to mentor undergraduates in teaching and research, mentor graduate students in teaching, and participate in a vibrant, teaching-focused community within the department and the University. Furthermore, the department has an active Equity and Inclusion Committee (PEIC) that aims to advance the department’s goal of inclusive excellence. 

Minimum Qualifications:

·    Ph.D. in Psychology by August 2024

·    Experience as instructor of record in Psychology at the college level

Preferred Qualifications:

·    Experience with remote, online, or distance teaching and online course development

·    Familiarity with the Canvas learning management system or a similar system

·    Experience working with nontraditional students and their needs.

Duties:

·    In consultation with the Department of Psychology and the College of General Studies (CGS), teach a combination of online and in-person courses each semester.

·    Meet with students to provide support for their learning and mentoring, appropriate to their educational needs.

·     Provide service to the Department of Psychology and to CGS, to be arranged with the chair and dean, respectively.

·        A cover letter summarizing the candidate’s interest and qualifications for the position.

·        A curriculum vitae that clearly enumerates the candidate’s education, teaching experience (i.e., the number of unique courses, the number of times each course has been taught, the size and format of each class, and whether the candidate was instructor of record), mentoring experience, and service roles

·        A teaching statement that includes the candidates teaching philosophy (with examples, where relevant), teaching experience (with attention to remote teaching as well as in person teaching), and teaching interests

·        Recent quantitative and qualitative student evaluations of teaching, including original and complete student responses in addition to any summaries.

·        A diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) statement that includes the candidate’s general understanding of DEI; the candidate’s incorporation of DEI into their teaching; the candidate’s record of relevant activities such as service and mentoring; and the candidate’s specific plans and goals for advancing DEI at the University of Pittsburgh (see www.diversity.pitt.edu). 

·        The names and contact information of referees who may be contacted for letters of recommendation.
