The Department of Psychology at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, the National Public Honors College is accepting applications for two (2) one-year visiting assistant professor positions in Psychology (areas open), to begin August 2023. Teaching responsibilities will include general courses in the major (e.g., Intro to Psychology), core and upper-level topics courses in one’s area of specialization. Successful candidates must produce the necessary documentation to legally work in the U.S. upon hire. Qualifications: Applicants should have a doctorate in Psychology (Ph.D. preferred; ABD acceptable, and at time of contract will be hired at the rank of Visiting Instructor) and be committed to excellence in undergraduate teaching. A traditional course load is 3 courses per semester and a commitment to culturally competent teaching/mentoring and fostering inclusive and equitable learning environments is essential. Ability to provide undergraduate student research opportunities is encouraged.

The department of 14 faculty supports the psychology major, which is among the largest at the College. More than 73% of psychology majors pursue advanced degrees upon graduating.

Non-sectarian since its founding, St. Mary’s College of Maryland, a public Carnegie Baccalaureate, Arts and Sciences institution located in St. Mary's City, 70 miles southeast of Washington, D.C., has been designated a national public honors college. With selective admissions policies, academically talented students, and a rigorous curriculum, we offer a small college experience similar to that found at exceptional private colleges. The quality of life is enhanced by the recreational opportunities of the Chesapeake region and by our proximity to Washington, D.C. and Baltimore.

St. Mary’s College embodies diversity and inclusion in its mission. We create an environment that recognizes the value of individual and group differences and we encourage inquiries from applicants who will contribute to our cultural and racial/ethnic diversity. Application materials should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae (including email address), statement of teaching philosophy, evidence of teaching effectiveness (if available), and a statement explaining how the candidate’s teaching at the College will contribute to a culture of inclusion and campus diversity.

In support of inclusive hiring practices, for all SMCM faculty searches initiated after February 15, 2022, the College will request three professional references (rather than letters of recommendation) at the time of application. Of these three references, at least one reference should speak to the candidate's disciplinary expertise and at least one should have seen the candidate deliver or design classroom instruction. References will be contacted only for candidates who advance to finalist interviews. Applications are being accepted online at apply.interfolio.com/121893 . Questions may be directed to Dr. Aileen Bailey, Psychology Department Co-Chair, at ambailey@smcm.edu .

Review of applications will begin around March 13, 2023 and continue until the position is filled. Employment will be contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check, and proof of COVID-19 vaccination, medical and religious exemptions will be considered. St. Mary’s College of Maryland is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer.
