    POSITION DESCRIPTION

    The Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for a tenure-track teaching faculty position as an Assistant Teaching Professor (Lecturer with Potential Security of Employment; LPSOE), with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2023. The Assistant Teaching Professor position is for individuals who wish to focus their careers on teaching, and who are engaged in evidence-based and reflective teaching practices. The Department is looking for individuals who can contribute to our core curricular needs, such as introduction to psychology, research methods, and courses in biopsychology and neuroscience.

    Responsibilities of teaching faculty include teaching and teaching-related tasks for lower and upper division undergraduate courses; mentorship of undergraduate, and potentially graduate students; professional and/or scholarly achievement and creative activity, including activities relating to instruction and pedagogy; and participation in university service. This scholar would assume a leadership role as a facilitator and initiator of equitable curriculum design, pedagogical innovations, and training and mentoring for teaching excellence in the department and their discipline. The candidate’s responsibilities will also include non-instructional undergraduate activities, such as supporting student’s research endeavors, mentoring diverse students, and working to improve the quality of the undergraduate major experience in the department.

    Faculty in this title are members of the Academic Senate, with benefits and privileges that parallel the professor track. Successful candidates will have a record of collaborative activity, and will be able to contribute to the improvement of the undergraduate and graduate experience in the department and division.     QUALIFICATIONS

    Basic qualifications (required at time of application): Basic Qualifications: Applicants must have completed all requirements for a PhD (or equivalent) except the dissertation in Psychological & Brain Sciences or a related field at the time of application.

    Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

    PhD (or equivalent) should be conferred by anticipated appointment start date (July 2023).

    Preferred qualifications

    -A demonstrated record of, or strong potential for, outstanding teaching.

    -Taught at least one course as instructor of record or demonstrated equivalent teaching responsibilities.

    -Contributions to DEI as part of their teaching, service, or scholarly activity

    -Professional and/or scholarly activity in psychology and neuroscience and/or scholarship relating to instruction or pedagogy

    • Statement of Contributions to Diversity - Describe how your teaching and mentoring, service and engagement, and/or scholarship contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion. In this statement, describe any steps you have taken to foster an inclusive intellectual environment in your courses, mentoring activities, in the department and on campus, and/or in your field more generally. (2 pages max)

    • Evidence of Teaching Effectiveness - As a single PDF document please upload the following: a syllabus, a sample assignment with an associated rubric, and a one-page reflective summary of prior teaching evaluations or other feedback on your teaching.

    • Teaching evaluation - A full report of teaching evaluations from one course. (Optional)
