Position Description
The Department of Psychology and African American Studies Program seek applicants for a tenure-track position at the Assistant professor level to begin in August 2023. This joint appointment is open to any area of specialization. Faculty hired in this position will teach graduate and undergraduate courses (including a to-be-developed cross-listed course in Black Psychology) and supervise graduate students. The tenure-granting department will be Psychology, with teaching duties split between the two departments based on specific needs.
This tenure-track position is included in the University of Mississippi, College of Liberal Arts multi-year faculty cluster hire initiative. This initiative is designed to expand our understanding of multicultural competence in a number of areas including, among others to be named in future years: successful, effective, and ethical leadership; inclusive pedagogy in STEM; and Black intellectual thought in the Humanities. We seek scholars and scholarship with a focus on the experiences of African Americans and other underrepresented groups and attention to identities with respect to race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality. Our goal is to attract and support a diverse cohort of tenure-track scholars who will produce cutting-edge research, scholarship, and creative achievement around one of these broad themes in their fields of specialization. About Our Programs
The Psychology Department consists of 23 full-time faculty members and over 60 graduate students. Graduate programs include the APA-accredited doctoral program in Clinical Psychology and a doctoral program in Experimental Psychology. The Clinical Psychology program adheres to a scientist-practitioner model of training, with a particular focus on evidence-based approaches. The Experimental Psychology training program focuses on cognitive, developmental, and social psychology. Faculty both within and across programs frequently collaborate on research. The African American Studies Program boasts award winning faculty and develops and coordinates an interdisciplinary curriculum that focuses mainly on the African American Experience in the United States, with particular emphasis on Mississippi and the South. Its objectives are to encourage all students and faculty to examine the African American experience, to facilitate a cultural and intellectual atmosphere on campus that promotes such studies, and to develop a program of research and community service. Applicants should have a record of research productivity and a plan for developing and maintaining a substantive research program that could attract external funding, as well as interest in recruiting and mentoring graduate students.
Applicants must have completed a PhD in psychology or a related area by the time of appointment.
