Materials for Incorporating I/O into an Introductory Psychology Course (2013)

Prepared by the Education and Training Committee of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (Joseph Allen, Carrie Bulger, Chris Cunningham, Mike Horvath, Lisa Kath, Morrie Mullins, and Scott Tonidandel)

Description

The following materials were created by the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) in an effort to produce some “shovel-ready” modules for incorporating I-O Psychology topics directly into Introductory Psychology courses.  Although interest in I-O psychology has grown among students, very few introductory psychology textbooks cover the topic. Therefore, we have designed modules that correspond directly with the topics typically discussed in introductory psychology courses (e.g., Biopsychology in the workplace, Memory and Job Performance) that can be “cut-and-pasted” into already prepared lectures.

For each module, we include a sample lecture (in PowerPoint), an activity/discussion built into the lecture, and key references for the topic area for further reading as desired.  The goal of each module is to address key themes/goals in I-O psychology and how they correspond to major introductory psychology topics.  It is our hope that you will discuss I-O psychology with your students in your introductory psychology courses or other courses. We also hope that the materials provided will make that discussion an easy, interesting, and informative one.

  1. Biopsychology in the Workplace
  2. Consciousness in Shiftwork
  3. Emotions Module
  4. Learning in the Workplace
  5. Memory and Performance Evaluations at Work
  6. Motivation in the Workplace
  7. Personality in the Workplace
  8. S&P in the Workplace
  9. Social and I-O Psychology
  10. Stress & Well-being in the Workplace

The modules were developed by the Education and Training Committee of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology.  The Education and Training Committee members responsible for preparing the modules include Chris Cunningham, Carrie Bulger, Lisa Kath, Morrie Mullins, Mike Horvath, and Joseph Allen.

The committee would like to thank Maurya Boyd, John Kello, Anton Villado, and several others for their recommendations and suggestions on previous versions of these modules. They helped to significantly improve the final product.
