Our Charge

The Committee shall oversee and assess all Society activities related to diversity issues, including, but not limited to, diversity in membership, integration of diversity into the curriculum, hiring and retaining a diverse faculty, and attracting members of diverse groups to psychology as a major and a profession.

Purpose and Goals

We are committed to increasing the presence of people and perspectives from diverse backgrounds into our teaching and psychology as a profession. The committee defines cultural diversity to include race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion, socioeconomic background, and physical ability.

For 2006, our goal was to focus on increasing the number of faculty and students from diverse cultural backgrounds in psychology. We have compiled a list of resources on recruitment and retention of diverse faculty and students. We have also summarized the recruitment and retention best practices. The summaries and the resources are accessible on this site.

Our goal for 2007 is to focus on the integration of diversity into the curriculum. We are currently developing resources for faculty who want to incorporate diversity into the courses they teach. We plan to have an on-line resource that addresses topics related to diversity that should be covered in the courses in all the major areas of psychology (e.g., developmental, physiological, personality, social, testing, etc.). We would like to include resources such as readings, in-class activities, and videos.

In collaboration with the STP Project Syllabus Team, the diversity committee is also identifying quality syllabi of traditional psychology courses that incorporate diversity heavily into the curriculum.

Please consider sharing with us the resources that you have found helpful in your teaching and/or recruitment. We also welcome suggestions you might have for the committee. Please contact Linh Nguyen Littleford at lnlittleford@bsu.edu.
